About My Research

Social enterprises have a dual purpose: tackling social or environmental problems while engaging in commercial activities to sustain their operations. Unlike traditional entrepreneurial literature, which focuses on creating value for customers, social enterprises must create value for both customers and beneficiaries. My research explores the motivations of entrepreneurial leaders pursuing social value creation and the competencies required to do so. It also examines how these leaders facilitate the co-creation of meaningful social value for beneficiary communities.

About Brandon Gordon

Hey, friends! I'm an operations manager turned academic and business coach and consultant. I'm passionate about promoting sustainable business practices. My journey began over a decade ago, and throughout the years, I've encountered many commendable businesses but also some that exploited their social contract. Business plays a significant role in unsustainable development and social exploitation, but it doesn't have to be this way. I've dedicated myself to a mission – helping businesses operate in a way that generates social value rather than undermining it.

Calling Social Enterprise Leaders!!

If you've founded a social enterprise or play a key decision-making role in one, I want to hear your story. By sharing your experiences, we can inspire others to start their own social enterprises and help them create meaningful social impact.

1:1 Interviews
I'm looking to speak with 20 social enterprise leaders to participate in a research study exploring their unique motivations and leadership capabilities in the social impact space. This important research will examine the fascinating ways leaders co-create meaningful social value alongside their beneficiary communities. The area of social value co-creation remains largely understudied in academic literature, making this research particularly valuable. Each thoughtful conversation will last under an hour and take place remotely via Zoom or Microsoft Teams, making participation convenient and accessible. I'll use a carefully designed semi-structured interview format to create a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere that encourages open dialogue. This proven approach ensures participants can comfortably share their stories while allowing us to explore complex topics in depth, leading to rich insights about social enterprise leadership.

Arts-Based Groups
I will conduct group sessions in which participants will draw their turning point, what motivated them on their journey, and then discuss this with the group—don't worry, artistic talent isn't required! This will be followed by a group discussion where participants share their stories using their drawings as visual aids. Arts-based inquiry reveals unique insights through creative expression, uncovering emotions and implicit information that traditional research methods often miss. This approach aligns with modern leadership research by capturing lived experiences through both visual and verbal communication.
